Smith announces he’s writing a book entitled – “THE SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY OF GALACTIC CASTAWAYS”. He dictates his words into a voice recorder.
Don and John try using an alternative fuel to lift off from the planet but it fails. Their next idea involves launching a two person craft attached to a giant hot air balloon. However the craft accidentally launches with Will and Smith in it (Smith‘s idea from the beginning had been to commandeer the vehicle and take it for himself).
Smith and Will land on another planet. Will asks Dr Smith to look after him, telling him he’d be good at it. Smith responds he hasn’t had a lot of experience in this regard. John uses the jetpack to search for Smith and Will. He finds them just in time to save them both from a malevolent bush creature, which he uses a laser gun to zap.
JUDY: “Didn’t you hear it?” (the explosion)
SMITH: “I have conditioned myself to hear nothing but the dinner bell”.
Science lingo used in this episode includes the words –
The director of this episode was Sobey Martin (1909 -1978) who helmed a total of 14 individual episodes of LOST IN SPACE (among them a couple of my all-time faves). He was also a regular director on other Irwin Allen productions including LAND OF THE GIANTS (1968 – 1970), VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA (1964 – 1968) and THE TIME TUNNEL (1966 – 1967).
And if you can believe this, Sobey Martin is reported to have had a reputation for shouting “Action!” and then falling asleep in his director’s chair.
